TEFL with No Degree? Your Real Options for Teaching English Abroad in 2026

A clear, honest look at where you can teach English abroad without a degree in 2026, what 'no experience needed' really means, and the accredited TEFL pathway that gets you classroom-ready.

TEFL with No Degree? Your Real Options for Teaching English Abroad in 2026

This is one of the most searched questions in the entire TEFL space, and most of the answers out there are vague, outdated, or trying to sell you a course. So here's the honest version for 2026: you can teach English abroad without a degree, but your options are narrower, and the countries where it's possible are specific. Here's what you need to know.

The short answer

A degree is legally required for a work visa in most of the countries we operate in, including Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, China and Japan. That's an immigration requirement, not a school preference, so there's no way around it through a particular provider. If you don't yet have a degree, your best path is to finish one in any subject, then apply. The subject doesn't matter; the qualification does.

If you're partway through a degree, you can apply before you graduate, as long as you'll have your degree by your departure date. We work with final-year students all the time.

What 'no experience needed' actually means

This phrase gets used a lot, and it's true, but it's worth being clear about what it means. 'No experience needed' means you don't need to have taught before. It does not mean you walk into a classroom with nothing. Here's what you do need, and what we provide:

  • A 120-hour TEFL certificate (included in every TFT programme, completed online before departure).
  • In-person training in-country with experienced instructors and school staff.
  • A bachelor's degree in any subject (for visa purposes).
  • To be a native English speaker (or pass a language test for non-native applicants in some countries).
  • A clean criminal record check.

So when we say no experience needed, we mean it, we'll take you from zero to classroom-ready. But you do need the right qualifications, and we build those into the programme.

Why the TEFL qualification matters so much

A TEFL certificate is the one thing that genuinely levels the playing field. It proves to schools and immigration authorities that you've been trained to teach English, even if you've never stood in front of a class before. Our 120-hour Advanced TEFL is fully accredited and internationally recognised, and it's included in every single one of our programmes. You complete it online at your own pace before you depart, so you arrive already qualified.

Your real options, by country

  • Thailand: degree required, but the most accessible entry point for first-time teachers. 5-month contracts, departures May and October.
  • Vietnam: degree required. 5 or 9-month options, January and August departures.
  • South Korea: degree required. Best for savings, free housing, year-round starts.
  • China: degree required. Highest salary range, most travel time.
  • Japan: degree required. 12-month ALT placements, March departure.

If you don't have a degree and teaching abroad is a genuine goal, the fastest route is to complete any undergraduate degree, in any subject, and apply in your final year. The subject you study has zero bearing on your ability to teach English abroad.

How to get started

If you have, or will soon have, a degree in any subject, you're eligible for all five of our programmes. You don't need a TEFL certificate before you apply, we include it. You don't need teaching experience, we train you. You don't need to speak the local language, we give you basic lessons before you depart. You just need to be ready for a genuine adventure and willing to put the work in.
